An Unfortunate Accident

Yasu got an email from his sister this morning to say his father had been injured in an accident and was in hospital. We were quite alarmed and I immediately burst into tears just at the shock of it…and fretted all day about it until Yasu called his mum tonight.

It turns out that Otoosan had got his hand stuck in the machine that makes the bricks at the brick factory where he works, and when he had tried to get the attention of his co-workers they either ignored him or didn’t notice. In the end he had his right hand caught in the machine for 3 minutes, and when the workers finally noticed and broke the machine to free him up, his thumb was only hanging on by one small thread of skin.

This happened on March 3rd but because his parents didn’t want to worry us, being so far away and all, they didn’t let us know until today! (I’m kind of p-d off at that, I know they did it for us, but they are our family and I would rather know if you know what I mean!)

Otoosan had surgery straight away but they discovered that all the nerves in his thumb were severed, so the only thing they could do was to reattach the thumb. They have been waiting all this time to see if the circulation in his thumb starts working, otherwise they will have to amputate his thumb. Fortunately a little bit of pink has returned to his thumb indicating that there is the barest amount of circulation present, though it’s still early days, and they are still waiting with baited breath to see if it gets better.

Otoosan will stay in the hospital until next Wednesday (18th) at this stage. His work is paying for the hospital expenses but they are not paying him workers compensation so he does not have an income while he is not at work, which makes him want to get back to work as soon as possible. The only problem with that is that he is right-handed and his right thumb is the one that was severed so I don’t think it’s going to be possible for a while.

Yasu’s sister has also lost her job and is now living with Okaasan while Otoosan recouperates. As far as it stands it looks like we will have to support their living expenses for a while, and considering that we are already in a fragile state of our own (there are no jobs at Yasu’s work), we both might have to take on extra jobs for income.

I guess we’ll just be seeing what happens over the next week about Otoosan’s thumb. In the meantime I will be doing up a carepack for Otoosan to make sure he has a speedy recovery.
